With another year of football in the books and fans already excited for the next one, it’s a great time to look back and acknowledge the best players of the season. Across numerous leagues, certain players stand out as the most capable goal scorers of the year.
For football fans, or those who play fantasy football, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on these players through the upcoming season. Of course, fantasy football is massively popular across Europe and for some people it’s bigger than the real-life sport. If you’re someone who also enjoys fantasy football, these strikers will certainly be worth picking up for your fantasy team.
Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku has been the biggest force on Inter Milan since he arrived there in 2019. He has been exceptional during his time there, demonstrating enormous competency and abilities in every aspect of the forward position, winning himself a Serie A title during the 2020-2021 season, and earning himself the title of the league’s Most Valuable Player. Throughout this past season, Lukaku returned 39 goals and 12 assists through 53 appearances, stats that show he is clearly among the best of the best in this sport.
Luis Suarez
Suarez is a player who just seems to keep getting better with age. In the competitive league of La Liga, he manages to stand out and be a massive asset to his team, Atlético Madrid, despite being 34 years old. In the past, Suarez has received numerous awards, like the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Premier League Golden Boot. The move to release him from Barcelona in 2020 was viewed by many as the club getting rid of an aging player. However, his performance last season with his new team silenced all the critics.
Cristiano Ronaldo
The football world keeps waiting for the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo to show his age. They keep waiting for him to slow down so they can say at 36 years old that he is finally “not as good as he used to be.” Unfortunately for the naysayers, Ronaldo keeps playing and excelling at the highest level. Of course, his rise to the top is a long and memorable story, and he is still one of the fan favorites in football. Across the 2020/21 season, he scored 41 goals in 55 games. Despite off-pitch obligations, and despite being in the twilight of his career, Ronaldo still shows that he is one of the best footballers in the world.
Erling Haaland
Haaland is certainly not a player anyone was talking about before last season, but the Norwegian striker has quickly emerged as one of the most talented players around. Being 20 years old, he still has monumental potential as well. Across 52 appearances, Haaland managed to execute a combined 49 goals and 9 assists in all competitions. Haaland is building a reputation for explosive speed and precision shooting, despite being a lumbering 1.94 m tall.
Harry Kane
Harry Kane has been an English favorite for some time now and, since winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, he is now considered one of the best strikers in the world. However, playing for Tottenham has both helped and harmed his career, as he was able to shine in his best moments but had less talent to work with. Despite this, Kane is one of the best finishers around, and his stats demonstrate this, with 23 goals for the season with Tottenham in the Premier league. At just 27 years old, Kane may still have the best years ahead of him as he looks to join a new club.
Robert Lewandowski
If you absolutely have to declare one forward better than the rest, how can you not come to the conclusion that Lewandowski is the best in the sport? His repertoire contains every necessary skill and his reputation certainly speaks for itself, especially after finally winning The Best FIFA Men’s Player and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award. His contributions to Bayern Munich consistently make the team one of the best in the world, and his dribbling, long shots, and finishing abilities put him in a class of his own.
