Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema scored brilliant first – half goals as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 on the night to register a emphatic 5-1 aggregate Spanish Super Cup win.
It took less than four minutes for madrid to open the scoring thanks to Asensio’s golazo. Barça goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen could only watch as the Spaniard’s long range shot flew past him and into the top left corner.
Messi had been anonymous for the first 16 minutes, but briefly threatened with brilliant footwork in the box and then his ball across the face of goal eluded luis Suarez.
Asensio had another shot blocked after combining with Benzema and Toni kroos fired wide before Lucas Vazquez almost made it 2-0 on the night when his curling shot hit the left post.
But Madrid got a deserved second when Benzema pounced ahead od flat footed Real defender Samuel Umtiti in the 39th minute and turned sharply to fire home a low shot straight into the bottom left corner.
Messi burst into life again un the 53rd minute, dancing past two defenders to crash an angled shot against the crossbar and although Barça improved after the break, but they still lacked real adherence.
Saurez’s diving header came back off the outside of a post after Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas had parried Messi’s stinging drive in the 71st minute and Ivan Rakitic’s effort was also blocked.
The barça boss has had a tough start to life at Camp nou, for reasons largely beyond his control, but his side have underwhelmed under his command and he’s got a lot of thinking to do.
